What Is Responsive Design and Why Is It Essential?

Responsive design explained: why your website must work equally well on phone, tablet and desktop — and what happens if it doesn't.

Over 60% of all website visits today come from smartphones. If your site doesn't work on mobile, you lose the majority of your potential customers — before they even read your first sentence.

What does responsive design mean?

A responsive website automatically adapts to the screen size. Whether it is a 6-inch smartphone, a 10-inch tablet or a 27-inch monitor — the layout, font sizes and navigation are adjusted dynamically.

What happens without responsive design?

  • Visitors bounce: If you have to zoom and scroll to read text, you leave the site
  • Google penalises you: Since 2019 Google has used "mobile-first indexing" — the mobile version of your site determines your ranking
  • Conversions drop: Forms that can't be used on a phone don't get filled in

How do we implement responsive design?

At Adlegio every website is responsive from the start. We test on real devices — not just in a simulator. Our approach:

  • Mobile-first: We design for the smartphone first, then for larger screens
  • Flexible layouts: CSS Grid and Flexbox instead of rigid pixel values
  • Optimised images: Different image sizes for different devices (WebP, AVIF)
  • Touch-friendly: Buttons and links big enough for fingers, not just for mouse pointers

Tip: Test your current website

Open your website on your smartphone. Can you read all the content without zooming? Do all the buttons work? Do the images load quickly? If not — let's talk about it.
